In modern society, sports, especially cycling, have become an indispensable part of many people's life. However,in contrast to the development of other pragmatic translation, such as news translation, advertisement translation, tourism translation, science and technology translation, commerce and trade translation, etc.the development of sports translation leaves a lot to be desired from theoretical research and translation practice.Functionalist approaches indicate that translation is a kind of communicative behavior with specific purpose. The translation aim determines the translation strategies. In order to better realize the function of the target language, translation objective decides which translation method the translator should adopt to deal with the text. The target readers are the decisive factors in translation and the purpose of translation is to meet the needs and expectations of the target language readers.Incorporated with the detailed case analysis, the thesis expounds on the development of functionalist approaches to further explore the questions during the process of translating the Cycling Regulation text.In this thesis, the author attempts to study E-C translation of Cycling Regulations(excerpts)from a functionalist perspective. The thesis takes the excerpts from the Cycling Regulations as an example.Based on the functionalist approaches,it mainly studies the translation principles and translation techniques of the E-C translation of Cycling Regulations. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter presents the background, the purpose, the significance of the task as well as the structure of the thesis. The second chapter describes pre-translation,translation process and post-translation revision. The third chapter elaborates on the functionalist approaches and the feasibility of using this theory to translate sports English. The fourth chapter primarily discusses the principles and techniques of Cycling Regulations translation. The fifth chapter concludes the summary and limitations of the study as well as the suggestions for the future study. On studying the E-C translation of Cycling Regulations,on one hand, the author believes that fully understanding the structure and feature of sports English before translation is quite necessary. On the other hand, the author finds that the functionalist approaches have a good guiding effect on E-C translation practice of Cycling Regulations in a combination of the elements including the text structure, language features, target readers, etc.
