A Report On Translation Of Chapter 2 Of Research On The Evolution Of Modern University System In The Republic Of China

This paper is a Chinese-English translation report on chapter 2 of Research on the Evolution of Modern University System in the Republic of China by Xia Lan,who graduated from Fudan University.The Evolution of Modern University System in the Republic of China was Miss Xia's doctoral dissertation.Firstly,the author analyzes the reform process and educational system of Chinese ancient university system and expounds the practical significance and reference function of the report.She also summarizes problems,translation experiences and gives some suggestions for this translation report.Secondly,the author communicated key points and difficulties from the original text with Miss Xia for translating the text on the basis of understanding.Thirdly,Bassnett's cultural translation theory provides the theoretical foundation for this report.In some definite cases,the author explains how to take appropriate translation methods according to the guidance of this theory,such as the translation methods of proper nouns,cultural information,and of some long and complicated sentences.Finally,on the basis of the above research,the author puts forward some specific problems and difficulties,as well as harvest and experiences.The original text is about the education system during the Republic of China.At present,there are few researches in this field no matter in the domestic or in foreign countries.In addition,it is a good study point for the translation with the guidance of cultural translation theory.In the past,although some researchers even used this theory to guide translation,most of them were English-Chinese translations.But this report is Chinese-English translation.Moreover,nobody applies the cultural translation theory to the research of university system at present,so it is another innovation of this report.
