Chinese culture has run a long history, which includes food culture, language culture, folk culture, and historical culture.Food culture,as an important part of Chinese culture, has a profound cultural background and distinct national characteristics. The rich food culture described in The Scholars contains profound cultural connotations, which is a major feature of The Scholars. Therefore, the translation of culture-loaded words of Chinese classics has become the hotly-discussed issue. It is conducive to enhance cross-cultural communication and promote Chinese culture to go global. The skopos theory is proposed by Hans Vermeer who is a representative of the German functionalist.Skopos theory differs greatly from traditional translation theories in that it emphasizes the translators' subjectivity and regards translation as an action theory and intercultural communication activities.Skopos theory considers translation as a purposeful and result-oriented action. The core idea of the theory is that the most important factor in the process of translation is the purpose of overall translation action, and the translation purpose controls the entire translation process.Translation must follow three rules, namely the skopos rule, the coherence rule, and the fidelity rule. The skopos rule as a core rule determines all the actions and activities of translation. This thesis, based on the skopos theory, adopts the method of textual analysis and analyzes culture-loaded words of food culture occurred in the English version of The Scholars.Collecting the corpus of culture-words of food culture in The Scholars, this thesis divides it into culture-loaded words of tea culture and wine culture,as well as snacks and broth in The Scholars.By analyzing the culture-loaded words of food culture,it can be found that when conveying food culture in English and Chinese, the Yangs always follow the three rules of the skopos theory.Various translation strategies and methods including literal translation, free translation, extratextual gloss, absolute translation, and repetition are adopted by the Yangs in the translation of The Scholars. The emphasis of the Yangs' translation are on the food culture, tea culture and wine culture, which is faithfully and accurately passed on to the foreign readers.Nevertheless, foreign readers can also feel the charm of the traditional Chinese food and the cultural characteristics displayed in this Chinese classic novel. In order to achieve the goal of cultural transmission and promotion of Chinese food culture, the Yangs' English version also plays an active role in enhancing foreigners' understanding of traditional Chinese cuisine, folk customs, and cultural exchanges.
