A Project Report On The E-C Translation Of Post-war Japan As A Sea Power:Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience And The Making Of A Navy(Chapter Two)

Military translation plays a significant role in all military wars that involve cross-cultural communication.Alessio Patalano's academic monograph,Post-war Japan as a Sea Power:Imperial Legacy,Wartime Experience and the Making of a Navy,is one of The Translated Series of the Great Nations Maritime Strategy published by People's Publishing House,which depicts how the Japanese navy meets the challenges of rearmament and military modernization in order to build a modern naval force during five decades after World War ?.The author was honored to participate in the project of E-C translation of this book entrusted to Professor Liu by People's Publishing House.Under the guidance of the supervisor,the author studied the book carefully and completed the translation task of the second chapter.The main content of the translation is the elaboration of the Japanese national spirit and the tradition of the Imperial Japanese Navy.Based on this translation practice,the author explores the difficulties in the process of translation from the lexical,syntactic,and textual aspects,and provides corresponding solutions,including how to translate military terms,non-military vocabulary as well as long and difficult sentences and how to achieve the textual cohesion.The translation strategies of inversion and division are suggested at the syntactic level,and lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion are adopted to overcome translation difficulties at the textual level.By summarizing some important characteristics and principles of military translation,the author sincerely hope to enrich the translation studies in the field of military affairs.
