With the deepening of legal exchanges between China and foreign countries,so far more and more attention has been paid to the legal translation,but among all the translated legal texts,judgment translation is still in its fledging period.As an important constituent of the legal text as a whole,the judgment is characterized by conciseness,accuracy and professionalism.With clearly ascertained facts,rigorous reasoning and argumentation and accurate application of law,the judgment is of great research value.In this translation practice report,the translation material selected by the author is a judgment decided by the United States Supreme Court.This judgment focuses on the issue of sex discrimination in employment,and this issue,involving the vital interests of women,has been a significant problem of societal concern over the years.After analysis,the author found the source text is characterized by the use of long and complex sentences which contain a great length of words,intricate syntactic structures with various modifiers.The translation of long and complex sentences has always been a tricky problem for the translators.Therefore in the light of the characteristics and syntactic structure of each sentence,the author mainly focuses on the translation of long and complex sentences and intends to apply several methods including linear translation,reversing translation,division translation and recasting translation to cope with different kinds of complex sentences.Meanwhile during the translation process the author chooses Li Kexing's basic principles of legal translation as the guidance so as to ensure the effect and quality of the target text.Through this translation practice,the author intends to achieve the following goals.First she hopes to raise the public awareness on the protection of women's employment rights so as to improve laws and regulations against sex discrimination in employment.Second she expects to have her ability in legal translation improved and her legal knowledge enriched.Meanwhile this report is intended to provide valuable reference materials for judgment translation to enhance the judicial exchanges between China and foreign countries.
