Wang Xiaobo died in his prime. His novels had not been recognized and valued by the academic circles for a long time. However, his maverick writing and strong sense of intellectual responsibility can not be ignored. From the non-narrative discourse of an art form of Wang Xiaobo's novels,it is possible to show the connection and mutuality between Wang Xiaobo's inner spiritual structure and non-narrative discourse. Then,in the history of literature,Wang Xiaobo discusses the uniqueness of non-narrative discourse and the enlightenment and constructivism in the field of literature in the 1990 s.Non-narrative discourse refers to the words in the category of “discourse” of narratology, which are issued by the narrator and express the narrator's emotional attitudes, ideological tendencies, and values, and have little or nothing to do with the development of storylines in narrative works.Including open non-narrative discourse, hidden non-narrative discourse, and irony.Wang Xiaobo uses these three non-narrative discourses in his novels on the one hand, and the intellectuals have a sense of responsibility to criticize the authoritarian,anti-intellectual tendencies, enlighten the public on the values of freedom, independence, rationality, and science;on the other hand,non-narrative discourses. It is the formalization of Wang Xiaobo's ideas and novels. In the history of contemporary Chinese literature,non-narrative discourse has also appeared in other novels. The non-narrative discourse of Wang Xiaobo's novels and Lu Xun's essay method have both inheritance and difference.Compared with the non-narrative discourse of socialist realism, the non-narrative discourse of Wang Xiaobo's novels subverts the content and form: textbook “style novel”.The profound and special features of Wang Xiaobo's novels have not only come from personal experiences, but have also captured the results of various thought resources and literary resources. At the same time, writing in the 1990 s graduallymoved toward the “flattening” of literature.Wang Xiaobo adhered to his solemn literary stand, adhered to the subjectivity of the writer's spirit, criticized the intellectuals' sense of responsibility, and reflected on history. The most important thing is that Wang Xiaobo uses non-narrative discourse to deconstruct and at the same time construct an ideal survival picture—free, interesting, and rational. The extensive use of non-narrative discourse is also flawed.Wang Xiaobo's novels in the later period cannot escape this paradox, and gradually become rigid and assimilated. However,Wang Xiaobo's non-narrative discourse highlights the sense of responsibility as an intellectual, the spirit of freelance writing as a novelist, and the spirit of pursuing the novel's form. This cannot be ignored.
