The small-budget films were struggling to survive in the cracks when the domestic and Hollywood blockbusters were flourishing infinitely at the beginning of the new century.It was the first time that people focused their attention on small-budget films when Crazy Stone was born in2006.After a long period of hibernating in the film market,the small-budget films finally began to burst into vigorous vitality.The small-budget films of China have made good progress in both internal production and external market operation after years of development.From the inside,been gone through from the original personalized narrative to the boom of commercial film and the multiplicity of narrative modes,it has gradually matured and formed its own unique style,not only does it have small-budget films like Mr.Donkey,but also art films like Gang Rinpoche,Kaili Blues,genre films like The Coffin in the Mountain,Black Coal Thin Ice,and feature films like Angels Wear White,Love Education.From the external market operation,the word-of-mouth marketing and differentiated promotion come to provide new experience and harvest for small-budget films.It proves to people unremitting that the narrative style of entertainment is not the only magic weapon for small-budget films.Artistic and commercial value are not incompatible.Young directors inject new vitality in to the development of small-budget films which is expected in the future.In recent years,there is a clear contrast between the brilliant achievements of small-budget films and the overshadowing of traditional domestic blockbusters,and at least one simple reason is that big investment is not equal to the high box office.The United States and European countries in the development of small-budget films or art of joint support mechanism and industry complement market strategy of Hollywood movies bring new ideas for our development.Of course,althoughas these courageous pioneers of small-budget films like Crazy Stone,Love is Not Blind,Lost on Journey achieved the market goal successfully and is developing diversified and matured,We can't easily identify it that the era of small-budget films has already come.There are still some problems with it.The unjustifiability of the market structrue has impeded its entry into mainstream commercialcourtyard,The imperfection of the film evaluation system makes it difficult to be treated fairly,The industry chain is not perfect and can't fully explore its market potential,The improvement of audience's aesthetic ability and the change of consumption concept still need a long time.The small-budget films should be a more stable component for Chinese film which is abundant in types and diversified in meanings.In recent years,the film market environment which is opening and inclusive gradually,the rising of young directors and the renewal of consumers concept of movie has provided good opportunities for further development of small-budget films.Many of them have shown great potential in domestic and overseas projects.
