For Chinese pupils,memorizing English words is a big challenge,and simplex International Phonetic Alphabet can not relive the burden of memorizing words.In recent years,Phonics has received more and more attention from Chinese researchers for its important effect on words spelling and recognition.This study takes Catherine,a 9-year old Chinese pupil in Grade 3 as the participant and aims to investigate the effect of the combination of Phonics and IPA on words memorizing of pupils.The methods of observation,tests and interviews are implemented to probe the changes of Catherine's efficiency of memorizing words and her ways of memorizing words,as well as her attitude toward words memorizing.The result of this study shows that the combination of the two methods can help Catherine improve her words memorizing speed and accuracy,change her ways of words memorizing and make her be not afraid of memorizing words.What's more,Chinese pinyin has obvious positive transfer for the participant's learning of Phonics and IPA.According to the results of the study,the author gives some suggestions for pupils' English words memorizing in China: teachers can utilize Phonics and IPA at the same time,which helps pupils build up their phonological awareness,improve their abilities of words decoding and recognition,and then increase their speeds and accuracies of words memorizing.
