The Relationship Between Adult Attachment And Marriage Satisfaction:the Mediating Roles Of Emotion Regulation And Coping Style

Marriage is vital for the development of an individual's life.With the rising divorce rate in recent years,of the good development and maintenance of marriage,the application of emotion regulation strategies and coping styles plays an important role in daily life.Emotion regulation strategies,coping styles and marriage satisfaction in particular get a world-wide attention.In the last 30 years,domestic and foreign researchers have made abundant accomplishments on adult attachment and marriage satisfaction.However,the study of the relationship among adult attachment,emotion regulation strategies,coping styles and marriage satisfaction is still a blank field.A stable and happy marriage contributes to the development of couples and their children,and promotes social progress.Therefore,it seems particularly important to further explore the relationship among adult attachment,emotion regulation strategies,coping styles and marriage satisfaction.The study was conducted with the questionnaire survey of 470 married individuals,measured by ECR,ERQ,Simplified Coping Style scales and the Marriage Satisfaction subscale of ENRICH,so as to explore the relationship among adult attachment,emotion regulation strategies,coping styles and marriage satisfaction,and study the mechanism that emotion regulation strategies and coping styles have in the relationship of attachment and marriage satisfaction.The results are as follow:(1)Couples with different demographic backgrounds showed significant differences on the level of relationship among adult attachment,emotion regulation strategies,coping styles and marriage satisfaction.(2)Adult attachment was negatively correlated with marriage satisfaction and cognitive reappraisal;positively correlated with expression suppression and the negative coping styles;attachment anxiety was positively correlated with the positive coping styles,and attachment avoidance was negatively correlated with the positive coping styles,the cognitive reappraisal was positively correlated with the positive coping styles and marriage satisfaction,and the expression suppression was negatively correlated with marriage satisfaction,and positively correlated with the both positive and negative coping styles;the cognitive reappraisal was negatively correlated with the negative coping styles;the positive coping styles positively correlated with marriage satisfaction,and the negative coping styles was negatively correlated with marriage satisfaction.(3)Adult attachment negatively predict marriage satisfaction and the cognitive reappraisal;adult attachment positively predict the expression suppression and the negative coping styles;attachment anxiety positively predict the positive coping styles,and attachment avoidance negatively predict the positive coping styles;the cognitive reappraisal positively predict the positive coping styles and marriage satisfaction;the expression suppression negatively predict marriage satisfaction,and it positively predict the both positive and negative coping styles;the positive coping styles positively predict marriage satisfaction,and the negative coping styles negatively predict marriage satisfaction.(4)The relationship between adult attachment and marriage satisfaction was partially mediated by the cognitive reappraisal.(5)The relationship between attachment avoidance and marriage satisfaction was partially mediated by the positive coping styles,and relationship between attachment anxiety and marriage satisfaction was partially mediated by the negative coping styles.Results suggest: adult attachment not only can affect marriage satisfaction directly,but also affect marriage satisfaction by the cognitive reappraisal or the coping styles.
