You’re the Only One I Can Tell:Inside the Language of Women’s Friendships was written by Deborah Tannen,an American linguist. As a sociolinguistic work, this warm and wise exploration of female friendship will help women avoid the hurt feelings that come from common miscommunications by probing into the unique ways women talk to one another. It includes eight chapters, with each chapter centered on a female friendships’ topic. The seventh chapter, which centers on women, friendship, and social media, was chosen as the source text of this English-Chinese translation. The report is based on the very translation conducted under the guidance of Skopos theory. This report mainly analyzes the translation of proper names and rhetorical devices with typical examples, especially at the lexical level. It is hoped that this will draw on experience from the translation and find problems in it so as to be of some value for the translator’s future work. This translation practice has equipped the translator with a basic understanding of language and gender and enhanced her professional competence.Meanwhile,it is always necessary for a translator to improve both Chinese and English and to do some research about the background related to the original version as well.
