In recent years, social network sites(SNS)are more and more popular in Chinese people, especially in Chinese college students. The 41 th statistical report from CNNIC reveals that there are more than 656 million social network site users in China, and about half of the users' age are from 10~29.For Chinese college students,it' s a everyday activity to have a communication with friends, schoolmates or parents on all kinds of social network site, such as Qzone,We Chat or Renren et al.As a new interpersonal interaction instrument, social network site provided more and better opportunities for college students to build and maintain a network of online friends, which has a very significant effects on college students' psychological and social adaption.Though a large number of researches focused on the association between SNS use intensity,self-esteem and depression, however,so far there has not been a consensus.Social networking sites are the Internet applications designed to help individuals build online social networks.Through cyberspace, social networking sites provide a variety of social functions and services for users. With the growing popularity of social networking sites and the widespread infiltration of human life, the relationship between social network sites and depression has been paid more and more attention and research, and even there is a proprietary vocabulary “facial depression” abroad to describe the clinical depression caused by too much time to indulge in Facebook. However, there are inconsistent findings in the relationship between social network sites and depression. Therefore, this study intends to further explore the relationship between the use of social network sites and depression.According to the susceptibility model of depression,self-esteem is an importantfactor affecting individual depression. It is influenced by individual cognitive and environmental factors and has the characteristics of variable mobility.Previous studies have made a lot of discussions on the relationship between social networking and self-esteem,or the relationship between social networking sites and depression, and less from the theoretical background of the depression model. And then it affects depression. Therefore, this study investigated the internal relationship mechanism between the three strength of social networking sites, including self-esteem,self esteem and depression. There are differences in the use of social networks between boys and girls, which may further lead to a different impact on the psychological adaptation and development of boys and girls.Previous studies on the relationship between the use of social networking sites and the relationship between self-esteem and depression have paid less attention to the possible gender differences. Therefore, this study examines the role of gender in the relationship between the use intensity and self-esteem of social networking sites, the use of social networking sites and the relationship between depression and social networking. In this study,475 college students in a university of Ji' nan were taken as subjects. The questionnaire was used to measure the use intensity of social networking sites(SNSIS),self reported self-esteem scale(SES),self-reported self esteem scale(SES),and self reported self rating Depression Scale(SDS)to measure depression.Through data analysis, the following findings are found:(1)The intensity and self-esteem of College Students' social networking sites were significantly positively correlated, but negatively correlated with depression.Self-esteem and depression were negatively correlated.(2)Self-esteem has a complete mediating effect on the negative prediction of depression in college students' social networking sites.(3)Gender has a regulatory role in the relationship between the use of strength and self-esteem of College Students' social networking sites, and the use of social networking sites has a significant positive predictive effect on girls' self-esteem,and there is no predictive effect on boys' self-esteem.(4)Gender has a regulatory role in the relationship between the use of intensity and depression in college social networking sites, and the use of social networking sites has a significant negative predictive effect on girls' depression and has no predictive effect on boys' depression.Through this study,it is found that the use of social networking sites in college students can have a negative predictive effect on depression through the intermediary role of self-esteem,which means that more social networking sites for college students help to improve their self-esteem and further reduce depression. However, the positive predictive effect of use of social networking sites on self-esteem and negative predictive effect on depression only occur in female college students, but not in male college students. This paper provides reference and reference for college students' more rational use of social networking sites, and has certain practical significance.
