Homework design is an important link in primary school English teaching.It is well recognized that the interest and visualization of homework design can stimulate and motivate the interest and enthusiasm of primary school students for English study.However,for a long time,English homework in primary schools has not achieved the results it deserves.A considerable number of students lack the motivation to finish the assigned homework,they just manage to finish it under the supervision and persuasion of their teachers and parents.It can't be denied that the current primary school English homework is usually monotonous in form and outdated in content,losing the role it should play.The main reasons are as follows: 1.The content of homework is dull and repetitive.2.The form of homework is boring.3.The design of homework lacks features..The multiple intelligences theory by Howard Gardner emphasizes the difference and the uniqueness between people and brings about a series of new educational ideas.Gardner defines intelligence as "the capacity of an individual to solve real problems or produce and create effective products within the values of a social and cultural setting"(Gardner,1983).He proposes eight kinds of intelligences in individuals that are relatively independent and linked to specific areas of knowledge and cognition,such as Verbal-linguistic,Musical-rhythmic,Logical-mathematical,Visual-spatial,Bodily-kinesthetic,Intrapersonal,Interpersonal and Naturalist intelligence.(Gardner,1983)In this study,two classes of Grade 5 in Jinan Jingqi Lu No.1 Primary School are chosen as the research subjects.They are given a one-semester experiment on the design of characteristic English homework based on the multiple intelligences theory This study uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods.The main research methods include literature review,questionnaires,survey,interviews,homework design practices and etc.The aim is to understand the experience and feeling of the students in different stages of the experiment,to explore the key points of design of characteristic English homework in primary school under the guidance of multiple intelligence theory,to explore how to design characteristic English homework so as to enhance the students' interest and enthusiasm in English learning by reforming the types,contents and assessment methods.It intends to cultivate students' good attitude and self-confidence for English study,to improve their listening,speaking,reading and writing ability and the ability to describe,express ideas and communicate with others in English.Therefore,it can effectively inspire the potential of primary school students for English study,develop their multiple intelligence,and promote their healthy development.Through investigation,research,design practice and analysis,the main conclusions of this study are as the follows.Firstly,the monotonous primary school English homework type,content and assessment due to the outdated homework design concept,result in poor homework quality and unsatisfactory outcome.Secondly,the study has summarized the new ideas for homework design from the aspects of flexible and diversified homework types,rich and colorful homework contents,and scientific and effective homework assessment methods.Finally,this research believes that the diversified and personalized primary English homework design based on the multiple intelligences theory can considerably improve the multiple intelligence development of the primary school students,and hence boost their comprehensive language skills and comprehensive accomplishment.It is sincerely hoped that the findings of this study can provide meaningful reference for primary school English teachers' homework design,for the better design of diversified and interesting English homework so that it can improve the interest and enthusiasm of primary school students for English learning and enrich their afterclass English study.
