This report is based on translating practice of a documentary literature work ——The Conquering Tide: War in the Pacific Islands,1942–1944,written by Ian W.Toll, who is an American naval historian as well as a writer. The second part of chapter ten of this book was chosen by me for translation analyses. This book has no Chinese version yet.The whole translation process is divided into three phases, including pre-translation preparation, translation process and post-translation revision. In the process of pre-translation preparation,I collected some related materials and technical terms of the translation project,pre-processed glossaries and pre-translated the source text by using machine translation software. In the translation process,I completed the translation task on time with the help of CAT.In this process,I cooperated and communicated with other translators which greatly improved the working efficiency of the whole team. After finishing the translation project,I polished and revised the translated version time after time in the process of post-translation revision. This report mainly discusses the comprehension obstacles and translation techniques in the process of translation.Based on the inspirations and experience obtained from articles and books on translation theories,I divided the comprehension obstacles she met into two major groups: language obstacles and culture-related obstacles.Afterwards,I analyzed the comprehension obstacles in culture and language from the following aspects, including cultural-loaded words or phrases, military &historical backgrounds, contextual factors, and grammar & sentence structures. At the same time,I applied different translation techniques in translating the documentary literature work, namely conversion, concretization, abstraction, addition, and omission at lexical level, inversion, division and negation at syntactic level, and interpretation and repetition at textual level.I obtained valuable experience in fulfilling the translation project, and she hoped that the report could improve her own translation ability and provide experience and implications for other translators who will translate the same type of text in the future.she hoped that the report could improve her own translation ability and provide experience and implications for other translators who will translate the same type of text in the future.
