A Study On The Interpreting Of Quotations In Xi Jinping's Political Speeches Themed On The Belt And Road Initiative

Since China proposed the Belt and Road Initiative in 2013,the principles such as achieving shared growth through discussion and collaboration have drawn the world's great attention.And by delivering political speeches on more and more international occasions,Chinese leaders often express political standpoints and development concepts in an audience-friendly way of applying numerous quotations from different cultural backgrounds.And in this process of cross-cultural communication,interpreting plays a undoubtedly significant role,however,the interpreting of these quotations is a tremendous challenge for the interpreters.Skopos Theory,proposed by Hans J.Vermeer in 1970s,holds that any form of translational action may be conceived as an action with a purpose which determines specific translation methods and strategies.In the interpreting of quotations from political speeches,interpreters need to achieve the purposes of cross-cultural communication by adopting proper interpreting methods and strategies.Therefore,Skopos Theory can be applied to guide the interpreting of quotations in political speeches.Taking the quotation phenomena from political speeches themed on the Belt and Road Initiative and delivered by President Xi Jinping on international occasions as the research data,the thesis firstly proves the significance and feasibility of the research by explaining the research questions and purposes.Then an introduction to some key concepts involved in the thesis is given.Based upon the literature review of the previous researches,the emphases of the research are determined.Next,a theoretical frame of Skopos Theory and its three rules:the skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule is formed.And then the thesis carries out analyses on plentiful interpreting cases of quotations under the guidance of the three rules of Skopos Theory,and some interpreting methods and techniques such as paraphrasing,literal interpreting,amplification,simplification,conversion,generalization and opposition are concluded in the following part.At last,the thesis reaches a conclusion that Skopos Theory plays a crucial part in guiding the interpreting of quotations in political speeches.All these are expected to helpfully enrich the application of Skopos Theory in interpreting studies.
