A Report On The English Translation Of Chapter Two In A Comprehensive Analysis Of The Belt And Road Initiative

With the speeding up of economic globalization and cultural exchanges,China's intercultural policies have attracted increasingly more attention from the whole globe.As a result,the English translation of relevant texts is playing an increasingly more significant part in publicizing China's intercultural policies to English-speaking countries in the world.Within such a practical background,the present author as translator tackles the task of translating the second chapter in A Comprehensive Analysis of the Belt and Road Initiative by Xin Yuyan from Chinese into English.This book is an introduction of China's Belt and Road Initiative in accurate and refined language,which may provide readers a deep understanding of the initiative.As no English version of this book has been published,the translation task is both necessary and original.In view of its complexity,the translator finishes the job through the Systemic Translation Approach,including firstly a systemic procedure of various interrelated stages and steps and secondly the complementary employment of various translation principles,methods or techniques in the rendering of difficult words,sentences and textual fragments.Regarding the translation process or procedure,the translator works through four stages as prescribed in the Systemic Translation Approach: preparations,source text reading,target text writing,and follow-ups.In the preparation stage,the translator firstly prepares for the translation task all the necessary resources including translation principles,methods and techniques,dictionaries and bilingual texts related to the Belt and Road Initiative as well as necessary professional background knowledge,and secondly builds up a bilingual glossary of terms frequently used in the source text.In the stages of source text reading and target text writing,the translator reads the source text in four steps,i.e.,overall previewing,contextual examination,textual inspection,and overall understanding,and writes the target text in four analogous steps,i.e.,overall mapping,contextual planning,textual designing,and overall production.In the follow-up stage,the translator finishes the translation task by revising and proofreadingthe whole target text to ensure its formal correctness and functional adequacy.Regarding the use of translation principles,methods and techniques,the translator tries to complementarily select and apply various translation rules,methods and techniques in particular contexts for particular purposes in line with the Systemic Translation Approach.In the translation of some special words,the translator endeavors to find the closest natural equivalent to the Chinese original word from the English lexicon.For the translation of zero-subject sentences,poetic sentences,and other complicated sentences,the translator flexibly applies various syntactic operations such as adding subjects,adding conjunctions,and splitting sentences.In the translation of longer textual fragments,the translator deals with such textual features as logical connectors,substitution,reference and ellipsis through various translation techniques to guarantee the cohesion and coherence of the target text.The carrying out of this translation work is practically valuable.In terms of its intercultural communication function,it may help English readers to better understand the Belt and Road Initiative.In terms of its implications to translation practice,it may benefit later translators of practical texts with its flexible application of the Systemic Translation Approach.At least,this translation practice has helped to enhance the present translator's own translation proficiency.
