The early twentieth century is the replacement of the old century as well as the beginning of a new chapter in the history of the Chinese fictions.The sensational literary movement called "Revolution in the world of Fiction" is exactly an important part of the history of Chinese fiction.The creation of fiction is extremely prosperous in this period,injecting boundless vitality into the development of fiction.The Beginning of Modern Chinese Fiction is such a book covering a comprehensive overview of the history of Chinese fiction in the twentieth century.It is an academic monograph written by Chen Pingyuan--a professor of Peking University,and there is no English version in China so far.This book consists of nine chapters with its stylistic characteristics of formality and conciseness as well as covering plenty of classical Chinese sentences and four-character phrases,thus making the translation full of challenging.This thesis is a Chinese-English translation report of the second chapter of The Beginning of Modern Chinese Fiction.On the basis of the Chinese-English translation practice of The Beginning of Modern Chinese Fiction(Chapter two),on the basis of Catford’s translation shift theory,the translator selects some representative discourse as examples to analyze and summarize the translation methods or strategies used in this translation practice.The translator has divided this report into five chapters.The first chapter is task description,which mainly introduces the source,content and the characteristics of translation material as well as emphasizes the value and significance of this report.The second chapter is description of translation process,which presents the preparation before translating,translation process,quality control,revision and proofreading works in detail.The third chapter is the translation theory applied in this translation practice,that is,Catford’s translation shift theory.In this part,the translator will make a brief introduction of this theory and its applicability in the process of translation.The fourth chapter is the case analysis.In addition to summarize the key and important points of translation,the translator will analyze the translation strategies according to specific translation cases and make a brief review.The last chapter is conclusion.The translator will sum up the experiences and lessons learned from the translation,as well as limitations in this translation report and suggestions for further study.Through this translation practice,conclusions could be drawn as follows.First of all,it is necessary to acquire the background of the translated material before starting a translation practice,which helps the translator have a better understanding of the original text,thus being able to produce the translation of high quality.Secondly,translation theory has important guiding significance for translation practice,which can help to further analyze whether the translation is good or bad so as to improve the translation.Besides,cultural literacy and language proficiency should be continuously improved by the translator itself.Last but not least,the translator hopes this translation practice report can bring advantageous enlightenment for the translation practice or research of these types of text. |
