Lu Yao,a premature young author,left a precious spiritual fortune for his later generations in his short penmanship.In his two masterpieces,Life and The Ordinary World,Lu Yao showed great concern for the growth of young people and performed an artistic performance on the spiritual growth of a generation of young people.This thesis studies Lu Yao’s novels from the perspective of Western bildungsroman,which is based on Lu Yao’s attention to the growth of the youth.Due to his unique growth experience,coupled with his keen observation ability and life perception ability,Lu Yao profoundly and vividly portrayed the growth process of a vast number of rural intellectual youth in China before and after the reform and opening up.This thesis mainly uses close reading,textual comparison,psychological analysis and other research methods,with the growth of young rural intellectuals in Lu Yao’s novels as the clue,to explore different choice of growth and its cultural connotation of young rural intellectuals in the context of the great urban-rural gap under the background of reform and opening up.The introduction part of the thesis mainly clarifies the background of this topic,research status of Lu Yao,research significance and research methods.The body part is divided into four chapters.The first chapter expounds the origin of the concept of bildungsroman and its evolution in China.It also gives an overview of the definition and development of western bildungsroman and summarizes its periodical characteristics in China.The second chapter analyzes the characters’ growth in Lu Yao’s novels by close reading.First of all,it expounds the relationship between the protagonist’s growth and the environment;secondly,it analyzes the protagonist’s growth and the relative characters that affect their growth;finally,it clarifies the protagonist’s experiences of trauma on the way of studying,going to the city and love and growth,pointing out that the gap between urban and rural areas in China after the reform and opening up has greatly impacted on the heart of the rural youth.From the perspective of social and cultural phenomena,the third chapter mainly elaborates the cultural connotation behind the protagonist’s growth choices in Lu Yao’s works.First of all,from the protagonist’s attitude towards the city,this part peeks into the crisis of self-identity,and analyzes their inner anxiety and confusion of self-identity from the embarrassing situation of "unable to get in" and "get out".By focusing on the sacrifice of females in the process of males’ growth,this part analyzes the patriarchal thoughts and its causes in Lu Yao’s works.Finally,it discloses the mental crisis reflected in the protagonist’s growth via the analysis of "reading" and "labor".The fourth chapter analyzes the connotation of "body" and "landscape" in modern discourse from the perspective of "social knowledge",explaining the metaphorical relationship between personal growth and national growth and pointing out that the protagonist’s enthusiasm for the city actually represents the longing for growth.In the conclusion part,it is pointed out emphatically: the growing problem of middle-aged and young people in Lu Yao’s works still has universal commonality in the 21 st century.His thinking on the relationship between urban and rural areas in Chinese society is still instructive.His striving for self-reliance in his writing,the virtue and perseverance of virtue and moral character bring a trace of warmth and courage to the growth of the present youth.
