A Study On The E-C Translation Of The Best And The Brightest From The Perspective Of Manipulation

The Best and the Brightest,written in 1972 by David Halberstam,American war correspondent,is rendered into Chinese in 1973(during the Cultural Revolution)by Qi Peihe,renowned translator,entitled Chuleibacuizhibei.The translated version reveals how John·Fitzgerald·Kennedy's and Lyndon·Baines·Johnson's administrations made erroneous decisions and got America heavily involved in the Vietnam War gradually and thoroughly.It arouses interpretations and comments from the perspectives of economy,politics and military by specialists and scholars from both home and abroad since its publication.Nevertheless,rare studies have explored Chuleibacuizhibei from the perspective of its translation value due to its special creation period and the manipulation of then dominant ideology on the translational action,let alone the perspective of manipulation.In order to solve the two research questions that which aspects can manifest the translational action of The Best and the Brightest has been influenced by the dominant ideology during the Cultural Revolution and how the translational action of The Best and the Brightest can be explained from the perspective of manipulation,this thesis takes Chuleibacuizhibei as the research material,adopting two research methods,case study and contrastive study.This descriptive study solves the two research questions from both the extra-textual and intra-textual factors.The extra-textual factors include the reasons why the translator chooses David Halberstam's The Best and the Brightest as the source text,concerning the influence of both the dominant and the individual ideology;the translation purposes,to uncover the historical facts of the Vietnam War and to reveal the defects of capitalism and the virtues of socialism;its acceptance degree in the target language from the aspects of the publishing house and the target readers.The intra-textual factors include three main translation strategies,addition,omission and diction;handlings of the table of contents,the publisher's note,footnotes and parentheses of the target text.This thesis aims to excavate the manipulation of ideology on the translational action from the perspective of ideological manipulation to supplement the study in this field.By researching and investigating,it is discovered that the whole translational action of The Best and the Brightest is deeply influenced by the dominant ideology of the Cultural Revolution.Extra-textual factors covering the reasons for the translator's choosing The Best and the Brightest as the source text,the translation purposes and the degree of acceptance of the target text and intra-textual factors covering the chosen translation strategies and the treatments to the structure of the source text can both be reasonably explained from the perspective of ideological manipulation.It is because of the manipulation of the dominant ideology of the Cultural Revolution that the translator would modify and adjust the translation in this very translational action.By studying the E-C translation of The Best and the Brightest from the perspective of manipulation,it is not difficult to find that the influence of the ideology in the target language cannot be neglected.This thesis serves as a modest spur.Due attention is hoped to pay to the influence of the ideology on the translational action of the target text by the scholars.
