More and more attention is being paid to grammar instruction in English education,especially in English teaching as a foreign language(EFL)or English teaching as a second language(ESL).The Secondary Vocational School English Curriculum Criteria(2015)puts forward a higher request to master English grammar.The memorization and drilling of grammar are less emphasized while students' practical language application ability is more stressed.However,most students in secondary vocational schools don't show interests in English grammar lessons.Over the past few years,more and more educators have started to propose student-centered teaching model and try to cultivate students' learner autonomy.With development of education informationization,online English grammar teaching is supposed to be one of the best forms to implement the reform of English grammar teaching and learning in secondary vocational schools.This study intends to explore the effect of online English grammar teaching on secondary vocational school students.The specific questions to be answered are:(1)What effects does online English grammar teaching produce on secondary vocational school students' English grammar performance?(2)Can online English grammar teaching bring any changes to secondary vocational school students' autonomous English grammar learning ability? If yes,what are they?A total of 96 subjects enrolled in the study are all Grade One students,majoring in Pharmacy in a secondary vocational school in Zhaoqing.They are from two classes(48 in each),one as the experimental group taught through online teaching platform and the other as the control group taught through conventional grammar teaching methods.The pre-and post-tests,pre-and post-questionnaires and interview are used to collect the data and then SPSS 19.0 is used to analyze the data.The findings of the study are shown as follows:(1)Online English grammar teaching produced facilitative effects on the subjects' English grammar performance.The experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in the posttest and in three of the five immediate tests.Compared with that of control group,the Mean scores of the experimental group increased from 52.69 to 63.44 in grammar level test.(2)Online English grammar teaching can bring changes to the subjects' autonomous English grammar learning ability.A comparison of the data in the pre-questionnaire and post-questionnaire between the experimental group and control group showed that the subjects' autonomous English grammar learning ability has been enhanced during 12-week online instruction.The Mean value of the experimental group were significantly higher than that of the control group in four aspects,i.e.learning interests and motivation,learning objectives,self-monitoring and learning assessment.(3)The majority of subjects in the experimental group held a favorable attitude towards online English grammar teaching.Based on this,online English grammar teaching is effective on secondary vocational school students.It opens up a new path for the reform of English grammar teaching and it is hoped that the study can give some guidance conducive to English grammar teaching in secondary vocational schools.
