The wartime alliances established by the United Kingdom and the United States during World War II have continued through a series of post-war treaties. However, the"special relations" between Britain and the United States have not always been smooth, and changes in the international situation and national strength have affected relations between the two countries. In the 1970s,the United States adjusted its own policies in the context of the trend of multi-polarization,and the direct dialogue with the Soviet Union during the detente weakened the communication role of the United Kingdom. In the 1960s and 1970s,the development of the political situation in the southeastern wing of NATO and the disputes between countries caused turmoil in the southern wing of NATO,which developed into a crisis.Among them, the dispute between Greece and Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean was very different.Cyprus is a One of the focuses between the two countries. The United Kingdom holds two sovereign island bases and is a guarantor country established by the Cyprus country and a direct participant in the management of the island issue. The United States,as a leader of the Western Union,is working with Britain to handle the Cyprus issue. The Cyprus issue was an issue that has emerged since World War II and continues unresolved. It originated from the disputes of power-sharing between the two peoples of the state, plus the ethnic, cultural, and emotional relations between the two nations and Greece and Turkey, and the historical grudges of the Greek and Turkish countries and the modern struggle in the Eastern Mediterranean. The problem has been magnified and the Cyprus issue has become an international problem. In the 1970s,the conflict in Cyprus began again.During the time of the crisis in the southern wing of the NATO crisis, the spread of the crisis led to NATO's military conflicts in Greece and Turkey. The war was imminent. This led to the attention of the Western countries, led by the United Kingdom and the United States. After consulting with the United States, the United Kingdom adopted diplomatic measures to coordinate actively. However, the influence of Britain was limited, and mediation had little effect. The United States, subject to its domestic political influence, has also had to change its mediation methods by sending special envoys, weapons threats, and high-level negotiations to mediate this crisis on the island. At the same time, the Soviet Union's attempt to intervene in this matter reinforces the US idea of harmonizing the conflicts of interest of various countries within the framework of the NATO alliance. However, the influence of the domestic factors in the United States and the differences in British and American and Greek-Turkish opposition to the political position make the crisis mediation process extremely difficult. The failure of the mediation of the Cyprus issue directly led Greece to withdraw from the NATO military organization and the United States to impose an arms embargo on Turkey, revealing the huge political differences and conflicts within the Western Union in the 1970s and the insufficiency of the United States and Britain,s internal control over NATO's crisis. The failure of the British and American participation in the settlement of the NATO south wing crisis in the 1970s was a major setback for the Atlantic alliance after World War II,which had a profound and complex impact on the future development and development of the Western Union.
