A Practical Report On E-C Translation Of Business Contracts From The Perspective Of Register Theory

Foreign companies have gradually entered China,trying to expand their business in the big market of China under the international situation in which China is opening up to the outside world.As an important legal document,business contracts play an increasingly important role in the frequent international trade activities.But to make the contracts easy for both sides of the contract to review,the terms of these business contracts are often displayed in both Chinese and English versions,which set high requirements on the quality of translation of commercial contracts.In terms of practicality,this thesis is based on the distribution contract and sales contract translated by the author during the internship in YGYM Translation Service Co.,Ltd.,so the report is highly practical and professional.In terms of theory,Based on the Register Theory of systemic functional grammar proposed by the famous linguist Halliday,the author analyzes the business contracts from the three variables of the language,namely the field,the tenor and the mode of discourse to find solutions to the problems encountered in the process of contract translation and to figure out some translation techniques.The thesis consists of five parts:The first chapter introduces the translation task,mainly involving with the background,profile,objectives of the task and the significance of the study;In the chapter two,the author briefly explains the Register Theory used in this paper,introduces the three variables that decides the register of the discourse:the field,the tenor,and the mode,and discusses the application of Register Theory in translation;The third chapter introduces the process of this translation task,mainly including preparation before translation,translation process,and post-translation review;In the fourth chapter,the author conducts a case analysis on the basis of the two contract documents.The author firstly analyzes the register features of the two contract texts,and then analyzes how to translate business contracts from the three levels of words,sentences,and texts.The lexical level concludes the use of formal words,archaism,common words with special meanings,series synonyms,and terminology.At the syntactical level,the author focuses on the analysis of typical long and complicated sentences,passive sentences,attributive clauses,and adverbial clauses in business contracts.At the textual level,the author mainly analyzes the cohesion and coherence of business contracts.In the conclusion part of Chapter 5,the author reviews the process of the translation practice and summarizes the knowledge and experience that the author has learned from this practice.In order to improve the quality of contract translation,the translator should carry out the register analysis of the original text before translation,and should try to pursue the equivalence of the three variables of the register in the process of translation in order to reproduce the original register features in the target text.The author hopes that the practical report can provide some new translation ideas for the future translation of business contracts.
