Ursula K.Le Guin is the representative writer of the new wave of American feminism,the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness is her representative work.The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed both won the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award,The Word for World is Forest also won the Hugo Award.Le Guin's fiction has a distinctive sense of feminist utopia.In the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness,she tries to eliminate the influence of gender on personal development,breaking the binary opposition between people and nature.She also attempts to build a harmonious society of equality and sharing.Based on careful reading of the novels,this paper uses domestic and international spatial narrative theories to study the narrative space,gender space and political space in the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness.By the spatial study of the novels,we can understand Le Guin's concern about the fate of the women and the humanity,comprehending her interpretation of the utopia.The thesis consists of five parts:the introduction,three main chapters,and the conclusion.The introduction mainly summarizes Le Guin's literary research at home and abroad,pointing out the shortcomings of the existing research and clarifying the reaearch idea of this paper.Meanwhile,in order to illustrate the feasibility of using space theory to interpret the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness,the introduction briefly summarizes the evolution of the feminist utopian literature and the space theory.The body of the thesis consists of three chapters.The first chapter studies the spatial narrative techniques in the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness,including the unique spatial structure arrangement,diverse narrative perspectives and the construction of unfamiliar space.Through the analysis,we can understand Le Guin's deconstruction of the traditional male narrative discourse authority with female utopian narration.The second chapter studies the gender space in the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness,discussing women's individual living sapce in the utopia.In this chapter,Le Guin's criticism of the patriarchal society,her concern about the awakening of female consciousness and expectation of the harmonious space will be stressed.The third chapter expounds Le Guin's political proposition by analyzing the anarchic construction of the trilogy of The Left Hand of Darkness.The conclusion points out the criticism and the foresightedness of Le Guin's feminist utopia,illustrating the positive significance of the literary space construction in the trilogy.Le guin treates literary writing with the attitude of the thought experiment,she actively participates in the construction of social space with the help of utopian literary imagination.The literary space in her works enables us to re-examine our inner world,reflecting on many problems existing in the real society.
