Research On The Media Presentation And Reporting Framework Of Chinese Square Dance

Square dance is a mass fitness movement in China,the participants of which have been increasing in the context of country’s vigorous promotion of national fitness and people’s increasing awareness of fitness.Due to the particularity of the square dance movement,some social problems such as the occupation of public space and noise problem have gradually entered the public view under the focus of mass media.What is the media image of square dance in China? What framework or principles does the mass media follow in reporting square dance? Choosing the PEOPLE’S DAILY,CHINA SPORTS DAILY,CHUTIAN METROPOLIS DAILY from 2013 to 2017 as the research objects,analysis their contents from the information source,theme,words and tendentiousness of the reports,and presents the reporting framework of news and the media image of square dance.The findings are as follows: The first,there are four main frames of the mass media to report square dance in China: political performance framework,business framework,sports culture framework and conflict framework.The second,The media’s report on square dance in China is an “instrumental” and “strategic” presentation.Under the framework of political achievements,square dance is a tool for government agencies to publicize their achievements.Under the business framework,square dance is a tool for enterprises or units to advertise and publicize to gain economic benefits.Under the framework of sports culture,square dance is a means of official sports institutions to promote mass sports culture.Under the framework of the conflict,square dance is a carnival for the people at the bottom to talk about the social problems increased by the square dance.The third,reports of Chinese party newspapers,professional newspapers and urban newspapers on square dance follow different reporting frames,and the media images constructed are significantly different.The news with political performance framework,business framework,sports culture framework reports the square dance in the positive way.But under conflict framework the news reports square dance in the negative way.The fourth,there is a correlation between the media image of square dance and the sources,themes,tendencies and images of dancers presented in reports.Generally speaking,the mass media presents the "instrumental" and "strategic" of square dance,which makes the media image of square dance deviate from the essence of square dance movement.As an important channel for the public to obtain fitness information and knowledge,the mass media should objectively reproduce square dance from the perspective of "dancer" or the bottom view to present the original appearance of square dance movement.The rectification of square dance media image has great significance to the promotion and healthy development of this sport.
