The United States and Israel have been widely known as special allies to each other;however, the national image of Israel in the US media does not always seem to be positive. This raises the question if the attitude of the US media towards Israel is in line with the stance of the US government. This paper tries to explore the answer to this question by analyzing the national image of Israel in the New York Times during two time periods:February to July in 1995 and 2018.The samples are collected from the Proquest database by searching the key words “Israel” and “international relations,” because among all the facts about Israel, its international activities have been achieving the most attention from the US media. The analysis is under the framework of the frame theory, and uses the content analysis method. It explores the broad theme frames, the emotional orientation, and the sources of news in targeted news reports. It finds that by framing themes, the New York Times has ignored the positive side of Israel's international relations and focused on negative events. In therms of the emotional orientation, this paper grades each report according to the three-level grading mechanism(“1” for “relatively promotional;” “0” for“neutral;” and “-1” for “relatively conservative”),and discovers that the New York Times holds a slightly conservative attitude to Israel, with the score standing at “-0.07” in 1995 and “-0.15” in 2018.The relatively higher frequency of citations from the pro-Israel side than others in both time periods cannot change the fact that the national image of Israel is not constructed in a favorable way by the New York Times, and is not in line with the attitude of the US government towards Israel.
