Journey to the West,as the eminent intellectual property has a complete world view and values,which is an important object to be rewritten and reconstructed in contemporary visual communication.Journey to the Westhas its own vitality.It is a cultural treasure that can continuously output value whichwith traditional Chinese culture and mythology.In recent years,they has been adapted and developed for literature,film and television and games,and has achieved great economic benefits.It is considered as the box office guarantee,but also deepens theinfluence ofJourney to the West.This thesis selects the most popular films and TV dramas of Journey to the West and explores the different ways to the expression of character complexity.The thesis is composed of 3 parts:In the first part,we mainly talk about the positive factors of negative characters and the negative factors of the positive characters.By analyzingthe causes of them,we cloud conclude the character complexity.In this partSelect Tang's monk,Sun Wukong and some evil spirit as the research object.For example,selfishness,hypocrisy and weak in the character of Tang's monk.In the second part,the attenuation and inheritance of character complexity are the most important standpoint.I choose a movie Monkey King:Hero Is Back and a TV play named Journey to the West(1986)to be the main research object.Some 6f them have deleted part of traits of characters and caused simplification and labeling of character.Some retain the portrayal of the complexity of certain characters,or follow the original clues to deepen the versatility of characters.Different treatments also make the adaptation works have different artistic expression and value.Then I approach this subject from different angles,when adapters adapt the novel for movies,films or games,there are not only opportunity,but also blind spots indeed.If blindly pander to low tastes or play to the gallery,it will pull the classics into a frippery.So a successful adaptation or arrangement should give consideration to both classical and popularity.In the end,I hope the Journey to the West and itsadaptations could have a bright future.
