With the widespread application of CLT(Communicative Language Teaching)in China,increasingly importance has been attached to culture teaching,an important part of language teaching.Cross-cultural communication involves mutual interaction,and English is now more the lingua franca for international communication than the first language in English-speaking countries,so English teaching in China is supposed to include both English culture teaching and Chinese culture teaching.However,Chinese culture has been playing little part in English teaching for ages in China,which has resulted in students' always failing to gain the ability to get across Chinese culture in English,the phenomenon of which is called culture aphasia.Since the release of the Curriculum Standard for Senior High in 2003,the important status of Chinese culture in English teaching has been officially established.Much as the situation of Chinese culture teaching in China has improved,problems still exist in textbooks and real classrooms.The study analyses in all directions the contents of Chinese culture included in Advance with English adopted widely in Jiangsu Province,aiming to discover more specific issues about the problem of deficiency of Chinese culture as well as the solutions.The study analyses the Chinese culture included in Advance with English(both in student's book and teacher's book)through statistic analysis,and conducts an investigation about the present situation of Chinese culture teaching in China by questionnaire.The study focuses on three questions:in what aspects the problem of deficiency of Chinese culture embodies;what views high school teachers and students hold about the culture teaching in English education and whether it is common to ignore Chinese culture learning in English classrooms;referring to the Curriculum Standard For Senor High of 2017,what measures the editors and users of the textbooks should take to improve the present situation of Chinese culture teaching.The study quantifies the pictures and texts with cultural contents in Advance with English,takes the Curriculum Standard for Senor High of 207 7 as the criterion,and categories the cultural contents in the target textbooks.The survey about the teachers and students' attitudes towards culture teaching in English education is conducted in a four-star senior high school.Conclusions are as follows:1.the contents of Chinese culture covered in Advance with English can't meet the relevant requirements of theCurriculum Standard for Senor High of 2017 in quantity,topic and teaching activity arrangement;2.some teachers and students in senior high haven't properly recognized the significance of Chinese culture teaching in English education;3.to cope with the new teaching requirements and situations,it is necessary for editors and users of the textbooks to change their old ideas,strengthen Chinese culture teaching in English education,and raise the awareness of cultural character cultivating.The enlightenment that the study brings to the English teaching is:the function of Chinese culture in senior high English teaching has transferred from cross-cultural communicative competence cultivation to deep-level ideology shaping.Teachers are expected to make full use of Chinese culture to lead students to compare Chinese culture with foreign culture and build cultural self-confidence.And teachers should pay close attention to the cultivation of students' ability to spread Chinese culture in English.
