Late in Qing dynasty and the early days of Republic of China,under the influence of western missionaries and trade between China and western countries,western paintings which are dominated by oil paintings gain a great of popularity in Guangdong,China.Taking Guangzhou,the only foreign trading port of China at that time,as the center,western paintings are widespread in the form of "export paintings",which spread western culture and ideas.At that time,against the background of domestic trouble and foreign invasion,Chinese people live hard.Many people chose to make a living abroad to find the hope of new life,and Li Tiefu(1869-1952)is one of the them.In his early life,he turn to his uncle who lived in North America.Later he had a opportunity to travel to UK to learn the traditional western art which dominated by oil paintings.After learning for 4 years in the university,he mastered the art of realistic oil painting,which laid s solid foundation of his own oil painting art style in the future.Then he backed to America to continue his art study.During his learning in America,he studied art with John Sargent and William Merritt Chase,which made his painting skill more skilled.He brought orthodox western oil painting skill to China and he also engaged in the education of oil painting,so he became the early generation of pioneers in the history of the development of oil painting in China.Therefore,Li Tiefu played an active role in introducing western paintings to China.This paper is divided into three parts.The first part introduces Li Tiefu's life in the background of introducing western paintings to China.The paper describes the general situation of introducing western paintings to China by talking about the missionaries and commodity trade and then discusses the relationship between export paintings and Li Tiefu.In the second part,thepaper discusses how did John Sargent influence Li Tiefu in Character drawing and how William Chase influence Li Tiefu in colors and themes by analyzing the application of "western painting" in the painting style of Li Tiefu.The third part discusses the subject and the idea of his painting.And in the last part,the paper discusses the influence in the development of China's early paintings Li Tiefu has made.The paper talks about Li Tiefu's contribution to the teaching of oil painting in China and his position in the development of Chinese oil painting.
