India has suffered many foreign invasions in his history, which has a profound impact on the development of India's political society.Since modern times, the British colonists began the political modernization process of India while exploiting and ruling India cruelly. After independence, under the leadership of Nehru,India slightly reformed the original political structure of the British Raj and established the direction of political modernization in India. After Indira Gandhi came into power, the political modernization of India developed further. This paper puts the political modernization of India in the trend of the establishment and development of the nation-state after World War II,and attempts to explore the relationship between Indira Gandhi and the political modernization of India on the basis of literature collection. To promote people's understanding of the process of political modernization in India since its independence,as well as a deep understanding of the political and social status of India today. This paper discusses the relationship between Indira Gandhi and Indian political modernization from three aspects.First of all,Indira Gandhi maintained political stability in India during the early years of her administration. She solved the food problem and alleviated the social crisis. She pursued radical policies to promote social justice and to win people's trust for herself and the Congress party. She strengthened her personal power, and used the third India-Pakistan war to expand the influence of herself and the Congress party. On local issues,Indira Gandhi established a Punjab language state to promote regional stability, she also suppressed the Naxalite movement. In foreign relations,Indira Gandhi adopted pragmatic diplomacy and actively participated in the Non-Aligned Movement, which contributed to themaintenance of India's political independence and stability.Secondly,Indira Gandhi promoted the democratization of Indian politics. She consolidated and perfected the parliamentary democracy and promoted the development of electoral system and civil service system. She has also supporting women and low caste to increasing their political participation. Finally,Indira Gandhi promoted the development of party politics in India.Indira Gandhi's mistakes, especially the state of emergency, undermined Indian democracy, aroused people's aversion, and made the Congress party lose its central power for the first time since independence. On the other hand, with Indira Gandhi's personal centralization, the Congress party experienced several splits. There is a deep crisis lurking in the pattern of the Congress party One-party dominating, which provides an opportunity for the development of other political parties in India. The Bharatiya Janata Party, and the local political parties have taken advantage of the situation gain development, and the trend of multiparty competition and checks and balances in India has become irreversible.Indira Gandhi's influence on India's political modernization is both subjective and objective.Although her personal dictatorship, especially the state of emergency, affected the process of political modernization in India, overall, the level of political modernization in India was raised during the period of Indira Gandhi's administration.
