The paper addresses the development and evolution of India' s foreign policy to US under Indira Gandhi. It' s the permanent theme of Indian foreign policy to pursue independence and great power status. Indira Gandhi government succeeded to Nehru' s Non-alignment foreign policy, and adjusted it according to the national interest. The purpose of India's foreign policy under Indira Gandhi is to break up the balance of power between India and Pakistan. But the ststus of India in the world descend all the time. The foreign policy under Indira Gandhi was restricted to the geopolitical style of South Asia region and India' s military and economic dependence on others to some extent. They made Indira Gandhi government set the seeking military and economic aid as its foreign policy' s aim. The competition of US and Soviet Union in the South Asia region benefited India. America always provided India witheconomic aid. As America had been allied with India' s enemy-Pakistan, it couldn' t furnish India with arm and India turned to Soviet Union . However, India had to strengthen its friendly relationship with America for its superpower status in international politics. America also had to pay great attention to India who played the most important role in the South Asia for the Cold War. When Indira Gandhi came into power in 1966 ,the relations between India and US were estranged .The third Indo-Pakistan war in 1971 brought it to a low ebb. After India' s nuclear experiment in 1974, the problem of nuclear proliferation became the focus of two countries' disunity. At the second tenure of Indira Gandhi, the attitude of India to US became softer. During this period India began to depend on Soviet Union' s arm aid. The relationship between two countries developed under the need and disunity of each other.
