Linguistic And Cultural Study Of Alashan Toponym

This paper based on the toponym material of Alashan and studies from the perspective of language and culture.The linguistic analysis mainly includes the structure,words,word formation and rhetoric usage of Chinese toponym and Mongolian toponym in Alashan.There are three main aspects of the culture in Alashan toponym:Firstly,regional culture,these include toponym that reflect topography,geomorphology and hydro-logical features,toponym related to animals and plants arnd analyse their symbolic significance in Mongolian culture,unique mineral resource toponym.Secondly,historic culture,these include the compound toponym consist of Mongolian,Chinese,Tibetan that formed by the national fusion and toponym with tribal brands formed between different tribes of the Mongolian nationality,toponym associated with historical figures,toponym of historical and cultural relics.Thirdly,social culture,it mainly includes that toponym related to minority religions and reflect the Mongolian culture and customs,social psychology of good wishes,changes of toponym caused by regime change.The last part of this paper make a comparison between the Mongolian and Chinese toponym from two aspects:words,naming conventions,then,discusses their differences and explain the reason,in view of some problems existing in Alashan toponym put forward some countermeasures according to principle of place naming.
