Monographs on grammar are the foundation of the history of Chinese grammar. And the sorting of different ages of monographs on grammar can help us grasp the basic rules of Chinese language development in a systematical way.The thesis mainly studies the adverbs in Zao Lin Za Zu,a historical note written by Tan Qian in the Ming Dynasty.Based on an exhaustive search of adverbs in the note, the thesis provides a comprehensive description and analysis, which will help distinguish the language features in late Ming and early Qing Dynasties. The thesis is mainly divided into four chapters. The first chapter is preface, introducing the backgrounds, summarizing the definition and classification of adverbs, and proposing the research methods. The second chapter discusses the characteristics and usage of each kind of adverbs in Zao Lin Za Zu.The writer found a total of 432 adverbs in the book, which are divided into 6 categories and 42 subcategories. The third chapter focuses on the meaning of adverbs. In this part, the writer found many multi-meaning adverbs, thus demonstrating the complexity of semantic meaning in adverbs.Meanwhile, the writer observed the phenomenon of continuous use of adverbs and worked out the frequency of the examples used in the ancient Chinese corpus of Center for Chinese Linguistics PKU(CCL),which revealed that most serial use of adverbs arose from the Middle Age while only a few of them appeared in modern times. The fourth chapter is a summary of the whole thesis.
