In the first half of the 20 th century, the collision and development of Chinese modern and contemporary ideology and culture was no less than any period in history. The popularization of culture,as an important feature and trend of the development of modern Chinese culture, has an important position and role in the development of modern Chinese culture. From the budding in the late Qing Dynasty to the formal formation in the May 4th period,it experienced the disputes between the “popularization” and “turning the masses” of the literature during the left-wing cultural period and the baptism of various cultural trends in the 1930 s.The cultural popularization lasted over ten years and eventually matured and perfected in the Anti-Japanese War.The popularization of culture matured and perfected in the Anti-Japanese War has a profound background and historical significance. In the mid-1930 s,new Enlightenment Movement came into being in time. From criticizing feudal autocracy and inheriting the May 4th tradition to the call for anti-Japanese salvation, the New Enlightenment launched a series of activities to build a new culture.Cultural popularization is one of the contents, and it has been recognized and promoted by many participants of the New Enlightenment. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, numerous literators left the city, entered the countryside, walked out of the coast, and moved toward the west. The cultural popularization began to move from simple slogans to concrete practices.During this period, the anti-Japanese culture was greatly developed, and the popularization of culture was greatly advanced, and a new democratic culture was gradually formed. In 1940,Mao Zedong published "The Theory of New Democracy" in Yan'an,and proposed three major characteristics of the new democratic culture: scientificity, nationality, and publicity. Two years later,in the “Speech at the Yan'an Forum on Literature and Art”,Mao Zedong elaborated on the new-democratic culture in more depth, especially explaining and exerting popularization. The popularity of culture has reached a point of maturity and perfection.Culture is a portrayal of the times, and social development also calls for the formation of a culture that is compatible with it.The Anti-Japanese War culture served the Anti-Japanese War and promoted the development of the Anti-Japanese War.Popularization,as one of the characteristics of the Anti-Japanese War culture, played an important role in the Anti-Japanese War culture. At the same time, popularization as one of the important symbols of cultural transformation in China represents a shift of culture from the hands of the old aristocratic minority to the hands of the new civilian-style majority. This is the progress of the times and is also an inevitable result of history. In terms of content, this paper centers on the period of the Comprehensive Anti-Japanese War.The timeline was extended until the new Enlightenment Movement began in 1936,and it ended until the end of the Anti-Japanese War.The paper mainly revolves around two main points: New Enlightenment Movement and the New Democracy Culture, which are divided into five parts. The first part defines the concept of cultural popularization and sorts out the history of cultural popularization from the end of the Qing Dynasty to the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan. The second part mainly focuses on the new Enlightenment Movement and describes its rise background, popular ideas and cultural changes triggered by the War of Resistance. The emphasis is on narrative and analysis of the popularization of the New Enlightenment. The third part mainly describes the generalization of cultural popularization after the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and it summarizes the generalization of the new democratic culture as the theoretical value and significance of the period of the Anti-Japanese War.The fourth part compares the New-Enlightenment culture with the new-democratic culture, especially the contrast between the cultural popularization viewpoint and practice, and highlights the impact of the historical era on the popularization of culture. The fifth part summarizes the relationship between the great era and the popularization of culture.
