Chinese characters and painting have been closely related with each other since ancient times.In many cases,they are always put together.Therefore,the discussions and research regrading to the relationship between them is an very important subject all the time.The paper mainly analyzes and teases out the multiple meanings of “characters” and “painting” at first,as well as demonstrating their contemporary definitions.Then detailedly present and illustrate the generation process of the proposition “the same origin of characters and painting”,of which two premises are included:(1)the historical relationship of characters and painting;(2)the ancient literatures in terms of the relationship of characters and painting.This proposition first appears in the statements “Characters and Painting have the same substance” and “Calligraphy and Painting have the same method of using pens”(both were proposed by Zhang Yanyuan).Those viewpoints then have been further strengthened and enriched by people in Song Dynasty and become maturely in the statement “Characters and Painting in nature have the same origin”(proposed by He Liangjun in Ming Dynasty)and ultimately become fixed words “Characters and Painting have the same origin” at the beginning of Qing Dynasty.After that,the paper presents and analyzes the discourse logic of predecessors research about the relationship between characters and painting,specifically including “characters and painting have the same substance”,“calligraphy and painting have the same method”,“characters and painting have the same origin”.Finally,the structure of the relationship between modern characters and painting has been illustrated from four aspects: writing and portraying,calligraphy and painting,character and drawing,and text and image.This paper demonstrates the discourse logic of “the relationship between characters and painting” by studying the multiple meanings of “characters and painting” and analyzing the generation process of “the same original of characters and painting”,and further studies and demonstrates the multiple dimensions of relationship of modern characters and painting.This paper,therefore,enriches the theory of calligraphy and painting,and has positive impact on creative art creation.
