On The Translation Of Medical Paper From The Perspective Of Translation Shifts Theory

Currently,in the worldwide,there are more than 500 million people who are suffering from the chronic kidney disease in various degrees.Thus,following cancer,cardio cerebrovascular disease,and diabetes,the chronic kidney disease has become another important disease threatening to human health and became an important global public health problem.China has a large population,from which the incidences rate of the chronic diseases accounts for 10%-13%.Undoubtedly,this huge cardinal number of the patients has become a heavy social and economic burden to our country.The case of this report is selected from the translation of the whole medical thesis the Immune System and Nephropathy: Basic Concepts and Its Clinical Significance.This medical thesis is an overviewed medical thesis,which summarizes the current findings concerning the mutual interaction of the kidney and the immune system as well as the research progression of understanding the immunological kidney disease,hoping to make a contribution to the domestic studies to the kidney disease.The difficulty of the medical translation,to a great extent,comes from the establishment of the equivalent translation in any point of intersection between the Chinese medical expression and the Western medical expression in the language “level”(grammar,vocabulary,pronunciation,morphology,etc.)and the language “rank”(grammatical structure,sentences,phrases,words,morphemes,etc)as well as the great differences between the Chinese culture and the Western culture.Therefore,on the basis of the translation shift theory by Catford,the British translation theorist,this translation practice report starts from the phenomenon of the level shifts and the category shifts appearing in the translation practice,and analyzes elaborately the applicability of Catford's translation shift theory to the translation practice of medical theses as well as the importance in applying translation shifts in the translation of medical theses.The author holds that the translator should select the most suitable shift methods according to the characteristics of various texts when applying the translation shift theory.At last,the author expresses the hope that this translation practice report is effective with the guidance to the future translation of the medical theses.
