| This practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation of Surface Effects: Borromini,Semper,Loos,which is an academic paper on architecture published on The Journal of Architecture.It aims at demonstrating that the translation shift theory can be accepted and used as an important guide to translation.After a neat summary of the task and process of this translation practice,a brief analysis of the type and the language features of the source text are given,and then the report mainly explores in the form of case analysis the realization approaches to textual equivalence in translating academic papers under the guidance of the category shifts.First,an analysis is made of the structure shifts applied in this translation: from passive voice to active voice,from subject-prominent to topic-prominent,between negative structure and assertive structure,and between post-positive attribute and pre-positive attributive.In using class shifts,the cases analyzed in the report are shifts between parts of speech of words: from nouns to verbs,from adjectives to verbs and from adjectives to nouns.The final analysis is given to the unit shifts from lexis to phrases and those between phrases and sentences used in the translation.This report argues that the objectivity and authority of the language of academic papers must be preserved while translating,and attention should be paid to careful choice of words in order to ensure that the translation correctly conveys the information of the source text,and to conform to the target reader‘s expression habits.And to achieve the communicative purpose of translation and make translation as faithful as possible to the original,it is inevitably necessary to make appropriate alterations in form and structure of the target text.More important,the translation shift theory based on linguistics has found an effective operating mode for the use of common translation methods. |
