Pragmatism is a philosophical trend of thought that began to emerge in the United States from the nineteenth century.His importance has still had a profound impact on contemporary times.The study of the concept of truth is the most important of pragmatism.The problem of truth has been refined by the new and old pragmatists,leaving the metaphysics of philosophy away from the empty talk to the discussion of the utility and value of truth.The alternation of old and new pragmatism is the pivotal moment to the development of pragmatism so far.The emergence of neo-pragmatism has given new vitality to the decline of old pragmatism.Rorty has injected fresh blood into pragmatism through the sublation of Dewey's truth.The development of pragmatism is a coherent process,and we should also look at the connection between old and new pragmatism and the truth by using a developmental perspective.By comparing the similarities and differences between Dewey and Rorty's Truth,this essay analyzes the change of pragmatism's truth view at the moment of alternation.The structure of this section is divided into three parts to discuss the process and inheritance of the truth view of old and new pragmatism.The first part mainly introduces the background of Dewey and Rorty's truth.Because the difference between the two people is 72 years old,there is a certain gap between the two in the living environment or in the society.The influence of the external environment The promotion of the development of both thinking in life also lays the foundation for the ideological differences between the two.This chapter is divided into three sections,first of all,from the differences of living environment,such as family and religion,on the impact of the two.Secondly,it analyzes the ideological background of the era in which both are,and finally studies the different theoretical bases of the two in the study of pragmatism's truth by the influence of both academic backgrounds.The second part mainly narrates the specific ideas of Dewey and Rorty's Truth.Dewey,as the master of old pragmatism,inherits and develops the concept of Truth of Peirce and James,puts forward the concept of "instrumentalism" based on his own understanding,Dewey's criticism of traditional philosophy and the transformation of philosophy all provide new ideas for Rorty and neo-pragmatists.Rorty,originally determined to study analytic philosophy,turned to the study of pragmatism's truth after disappointing analytical philosophy.Lotty critically inherited the main ideas of Dewey's view of truth and formed his own unique neo-pragmatism view of truth.Rorty for the truth of the concept of a new definition and evaluation criteria.At the end of this chapter,the main ideas of the two are related and distinguished.The third part is the last chapter of this article.In the previous section,I mainly analyzed the formation background and main connotation of the truth view of Rorty and Dewey.This chapter elaborates the significance and influence of the truth view of the two.Although Dewey and Rorty's ideas have a positive meaning for future generations,they also have negative aspects at the same time.Dewey's pragmatic truth concept influenced many new pragmatists such as Rorty and also exerted a profound influence on China during the May 4th Movement.And the most important contribution of Rorty's view of pragmatism is to put forward post-philosophical culture.
