The image of “fishing” is one of the classic images in classic Chinese literatures. Its clue first appeared in “The Book of Songs”,Jiang Taigong's intention of seeking fame and wealth by fishing in “The Historical Records”,the hidden connotations of Zhuangzi's “Fishing Man” and “Fishing Man” in “the Songs of Chu”… In the long history of literature,“fishing” has already developed from the purely practical production activities into an image with rich cultural implications. It is favored by ancient literati for its unique charm, and it has also become one of the most frequently used images in Song Lyrics. This paper comprehensively collates the “fishing” image in “The Collection of Song Lyrics”,traces back its history, explores the connotations of “fishing” in Song lyrics, analyzes the features of combining the “fishing” image and landscape image as well as the “fishing” image's role in extending the image of words.Discussion in this paper is divided into five parts:Part ? is the introduction. This part defines the concept of “fishing” image, summarizes the research purpose, significance, current status and research method.Part ? is to collate the development of the connotation of “fishing” image before Song Dynasty. In the long development history of literature, the “fishing” image has gradually evolved into the carrier of human beings' specific emotions and outlook on value. To collate the accumulation and evolution of the “fishing” image in literature works before Song Dynasty can help us have a more in-depth research of the connotation of “fishing” image in Song lyrics so as to inherit and innovate the connotation of “fishing” image in previous dynasties.Part ? is to analyze the connotations of “fishing” image in Song lyrics, which can be summarized into four parts.First, the leisure and comfortable feeling of enjoying “fun from landscape”,which is a main content of the “fishing” image. Many lyricists in Song dynasty pursue and seek the landscape environment for fishing as well as the fun of leisure behind it.They express the free and comfortable spiritual realm by means of “fishing” image in their lyrics.Second, the intention to seek “reclusion by fishing”.Influenced by the traditional reclusion culture, many literati in the Song Dynasty has a strong aspiration for reclusion through fishing,or due to vicissitudes in life, career and the nation, they even enter the reclusive fishing world to adjust their mentality, balance their gains and loss and get comfort. They express their intention of living a reclusive life through the “fishing” image.Third, the intention to “get a good job as an official” by chance. From Jiang Taigong's experience of meeting King Wen of Zhou through fishing to Lu Cangyong's “royal road to fame”,they seem to give literati the spiritual power that “living a reclusive life can realize one's ambition”.Besides, the emperors in Song dynasty treated the reclusive well, thus those literati who could not become officials(or temporarily left the position as an official)due to some reasons began to learn fishing or seek shortcut to become successful. Some “fishing” images in Song Dynasty contained the intention to seek a good job as an official by living a reclusive life.Fourth, express the sorrow of departing.Fishing sites at a village are often the place and environment for departure, starting a long journey or living a temporary night,so the feeling of departure will also be reflected in images like the fishing village, fishing lamp, fishing fire or fishing flute, etc. If theses images give people a lonely feeling, they will trigger the feeling of departure. If these images are warm, they can also react to the feeling of departure.Connotation of images from the four aspects are also the theme reflected by most “fishing” images.Specific works can be comprehensively analyzed combined with the political and cultural background and the lyricist's mood upon creation, and each of them have their subtle meanings.Part ? talks about the combination of the “fishing” image and landscape image in Song lyricss. It mainly elaborates on the most common and most meaningful combination: first, the “fishing-gull” image combination. On one hand,in order to get rid of the worldly restriction, literati usually regard the spiritual and innocent gull as their friends to express their noble qualities and the wish for reclusion. On the other hand, gulls at the riverbank often appear in the life of a fisherman as the scenery, adding vitality and vigor to the picture as well as injecting a noble meaning to the fisherman.Second, the “fishing – mists and ripples” image combination. In the first place, the combination of the two can often give people the beauty of broad space and create a boundless, dim and tranquil context. In the second place,“mists and ripples” are embodied with the independent aesthetic value and become the space for literati to get away from the worldly affairs and live a reclusive life to seek the truth of life.Third, the “fishing – reed” image combination.Phragmites, reed leaves, and reed flowers are important expression vectors for the beauty of reeds. When these images are combined with the “fishing” image, they can usually reflect the author's aesthetic interest and value orientation for the natural beauty.Part ? talks about the expansion of the lyrics context by “fishing” image in Song lyrics, which is mainly reflected in three aspects: first, the clear and empty context.Due to the wide spread of the Zen thought in Song Dynasty,Zen Buddhism exerts a profound influence on the spiritual outlook and cultural behavior of scholars. In a part of the imagery of “fishing”,one can realize the Zen interest and the Zen state of the unity of human beings and all things.Second, desolated context. The image of “fishing” is mostly related to the water environment. When the lyricist mixes it with cool scenery such as sloping rain, sundial, darkness, decaying grass, and westerly wind,it forms a unique artistic realm of dreary desolateness.Third, clear and elegant context. The image of “fishing” in the Song lyrics is mostly associated with the scenery with the beauty of the Qing dynasty and the softness in the south. When the lyricist uses the beautiful and elegant words,he creates a diversified and elegant mood.(P.S.the attachment is all the works involving “fishing” image from the “Collection of Song Lyrics”)...
