The Study On Ciliffside Statues Of Yuan Dynasty In Nanshan,Yuhang

The remains of statues in Nanshan,Yuhang are well-preserved,and the visible inscriptions show that these statues were chiseled in Yuan Dynasty.Through the study of these 14 statues,many interesting topics are found out,such as Amitabha(????)come to greet alone,the statue of Buddha's head,the valokitesvar(????)with a strange animal,the statue of one Buddha called“Huasuwang”(???)and the statue of Great Zhenwu,who is a famous god in Taoism.These uncommon statues reflect the aesthetic and the culture in this place during the Yuan Dynasty.After searching local chronicles,tracing history and compareing to the similar images,we find that the infiuence of folk beliefs was the main point at that time,and maybe it can tell us why these rare statues appeared in Yuhang,Hangzhou.Different from the famous Feilai Feng grottoes(?????),the statues in Nanshan is a display of the local pattern.Nowadays,it is the one of best cases which reflect the Buddhist art in the Song and Yuan Dynasties in Jiangnan area.
