This report is based on the author's business interpreting practice for Lancaster China Catalyst Programme.Guided by schema theory and its functions, the report made an analysis to the interpreting practice with an aim to find out the direct influences of schema on interpreting. The analysis of the interpreting performance highlights the importance of schema in interpreting. For a good interpreter,it is not just a matter of having enough interpreting skills and strategies. It also involves a lot of other aspects and schema is absolutely one of them.Schema is what we call a structure of knowledge which includes not only background information but also contents already existed or under formation in our brain.Through analysis,it is found that sufficient schema can help interpreters understand the contents. As a result, the rate of accuracy increases.Schema can also help interpreters to make reasonable inferences and trace back missing information.Besides, schema is able to facilitate process of information and enables a fluent delivery, which in turn helps business negotiation. On the contrary,if interpreters lack enough schema, they will be more likely to encounter some difficulties during interpreting that are hard to be resolved.Based on the analysis, the report concludes that schema effects interpreting performance in three aspects, comprehension, prediction and delivery.By demonstrating the significance of schema, this report was also hoping to be a help for interpreters both in their studies and real practices.
