Under the new circumstance of accelerated economic globalization, interpreters have been more and more valued and interpretation has been applied in more areas. At the same time, interpretation related to transdisciplinary themed speech is more and more common. When it comes to transdisciplinary themed speech, interpreters will sometimes encounter the comprehension barriers. Not many scholars on interpretation study have studied the relationship between comprehension barriers and transdisciplinary themed speech interpreting. In order to study comprehension barriers in transdisciplinary C-E consecutive interpreting and find coping strategies, this thesis analyzes how transdisciplinary themed speech influences interpreters' performance by an empirical study. The author randomly selects 14 MTI students who have learned interpretation in university for more than one year. The interpreting material used in the experiment is a keynote speech at 4th Risk Management and Agricultural Development Forum, with the theme ‘To Encourage the Development of Modern Agriculture of China with Financial Instruments'.The theme of this speech is the combination of agriculture and finance. The analysis of the comprehension barriers is guided by Gile's theory.By comparing the interpreters' performance on single disciplinary part of the speech and transdisciplinary part of the speech, the empirical study shows that interpreters encounter more comprehension barriers in the transdisciplinary themed interpretation. The author classifies the causes of these barriers into three groups: knowledge of language,extra-linguistic knowledge and analyzing ability.By the in-depth analysis of causes of comprehension barriers, six coping strategies are put forward accordingly to provide some guidance for interpreters: targeted training on transdisciplinary themed speech interpretation, reading more and thinking more, good preparation before the interpretation, expanding the productive vocabulary on certain theme, exposing to the English-speaking environment as much as possible and improving psychological quality.
