The redundant triple negation is a unique linguistic phenomenon in Chinese, the frequency of occurrences is not low,but it has often been regarded as ill-formed or grammatically wrong sentences. As a student of linguistics,we believe that special syntactic performance usually has its unique pragmatic functions and expression effects. This paper presents the summarization and description of the redundant triple negation, and strives to explain the causes employing advanced cognitive linguistics theories in hope for providing some useful help to the study of redundant negation in Chinese. The paper is divided into the following parts:Chapter 1: Introduction. This part mainly focuses on the origin of redundancy, literature review and pertinent achievements of the redundant negation phenomenon in modern Chinese. It also explains the research object?research significant?research methods and the sources of the corpus of this paper.Chapter 2: In this part we divided the collected redundant triple negation corpuses into four categories based on their syntactic performances and redundant status, and gives a detailed descriptions of each type respectively.Chapter 3: The third chapter is the cognitive explanations of the redundant triple negation. As a semantic phenomenon, redundancy is inseparable from the subjective consciousness and cognition of the addresser. This chapter focuses on exploring addressers' perspective?effect and epistemic status from the point of subjectivity based on actual corpuses, and processing cognitive analysis on pragmatic motivations of the redundant triple negation from the view of subjective reinforcement ?subjective weakening, implied cognitive loss and iconicity.Chapter 4: Ambiguity resolution. This chapter selected eight corpuses of redundant triple negation(including all four types of syntactic described in chapter 2)to carried out investigation and analysis about the understanding degree and acceptability of the redundant triple negation toward different Mandarin users and attempts to find ways to eliminate the ambiguity from various angles such as semantic expectation/interpretation and voice rhyme.Conclusion.This part concludes the main content of the paper and raises several issues that deserve further researching.
