Gui zang(??),as one of the significant social custom in ancient China, usually means people who sent the dead body back to their homeland and buried in the family graveyard. This traditional conception pays more attention on people who die in offsites and cannot buried back to the family ancestral graves, which stresses a distinction with domestic and nondomestic.Gui zang reflects the emphasis of the traditional family and clan conceptions.Furthermore,it holds connotations of‘Ren(?)'and‘Yi(?)',which is essential to the Scholar-officials in ancient China.‘Bu gui zang(???)',as the opposite conception of‘gui zang',means the dead were not buried at their ancestral sites, which is the abnormal phenomenon in the society.Zhang Fangping,a scholar from Northern Song, his article buxiaozhixing, which reflected his anxiety and critique to the phenomenon of‘bu gui zang',a Southern Song scholar named Luo yuan held the almost same viewpoint. They all saw it as an unfilial behavior.Another scholar from Qing Dynasty called Zhao yi,he found there were many Scholar-officials not got back to the homelands in Song Dynasty, which give us a revelation with the‘bu gui zang'phenomenon. This dissertation makes a statistics on the ‘bu gui zang' phenomenon of Northern Song Dynasty, and we can find the phenomenon was indeed widespread among Scholar-officials.The dissertation is to find the reasons behind this abnormal phenonmenon.Economic factors are the key reason, but after the further analysis of statistics,we find the fade of traditional family and homeland conception make a key role and influence much in their decisions.Beside, the marriage, atmosphere of special areas and civil examination are all affect their choices.Through this research,we could know more about the characteristics and trends of phenomenon ‘gui zang',and the ‘bu gui zang' phenomenon which reflects the changes between traditional burial and social customs,is worth of further studies.
