The work of Michael Borremans not only inherit the conventional drawing quintessence,but he is also challenging the normal painting logic by utilizing the defamiliarization techniques in his work.This stimulate audiences' conventional visual experience and create an appropriate aesthetic distance.The unfamiliar experience of audiences will prolong the whole aesthetic process and trigger pondering for the audiences.Start with the aspect of “defamiliarization”,this dissertation is unfolded in three chapters.In the first chapter,the origin and development of defamiliarization are introduced.The history of defamiliarization in painting and how western paintings contribute to this process are discussed as well.In the second chapter,the defamiliarized element of Michael Borremans' s work and the motivation why the artist utilizes this specific technique are explicated.The artist's representative works are collected for explicating the defamiliarized element.How the artist applies the concept of defamiliarization are discussed in totally four perspectives: defamiliarized faces,defamiliarized bodies,defamiliarized angles and defamiliarized scenes.In the third chapter,the author analyses the artistic value of the artist's paintings in the following aspects: artistic creation,art appreciation and interaction building method.Michael Borremans' s work successfully established the new contemporary easel painting.While inheriting conventional painting skills,the artist breaks the mindset of easel painting,which brings new life for the easel painting.
