A Study On The English Translation Of Rhetorical Style Of The Governance Of China From The Perspective Of Adaptation Theory

Political documents embodies the government's opinion,the translation of which plays an essential role in cross-language and cross-cultural communications between countries,thus is the same case with the study of the English translation of political documents.The Governance of China is a typical political text with its unique language charm.According to the data of CNKI,the study of the English translation of it is mostly focused on texts with Chinese characteristics,but there is little research on the English translation of the rhetorical style that shows its language charm,which provides the new train of thought for this thesis.Based on Adaptation Theory,this thesis studies the English translation of rhetorical style in The Governance of China,aiming to give some inspirations to the English translation of the rhetorical style of political texts.The thesis begins with a literature review of pragmatics and translation,pragmatics and rhetoric,and the application of adaptation theory to the English translation of political texts.Then lexical and syntactical features and rhetorical devices of The Governance of China are examined,from which that the rhetorical style of President Xi is summarized.The thesis studies the English translation of rhetorical style of The Governance of China from linguistic context and communicative context of Adaptation Theory,where two research aspects of linguistic context lie in lexical level and syntactical level,and the communicative context is studied from three worlds,namely,physical world,social world and mental world.The results are as follows:(1)The language charm of President Xi is mainly reflected in the following aspects,namely,the style of affinity and plainness,the style of rhythm and momentum and the style of deep culture;(2)Under linguistic context,unnecessary words,implicit logical words and complex sentence structures of ST need to be adjusted to adapt to the language habits of TT;In communicative context,the translator needs to take into account thesimilarities and differences in the physical,social and mental worlds between ST and TT so as to maximize the adaptation.After studying the English translation of rhetorical style of The Governance of China,the thesis concludes some translation methods for its rhetorical language and summarizes that translation is a process of making constant selection according to different contexts.In order to achieve the expected effect of cross-language and cross-cultural communication,translators should adapt to the linguistic context and communicative context of TT.
