The text selected for the translation practice is the novel An Innocent Gentleman written by Australian female writer Elizabeth Jolley. The text was provided by the Australian Research Centre of Mudanjiang Normal University. The novel An Innocent Gentleman is about the story of a young couple during World War II.The wife fell in love with an elegant upper-class gentleman and became pregnant,so the husband became extremely painful. The translator chooses the climax part of the novel as the translated text. This part narrates the wife's love for the gentleman, and the psychological state and actions of the protagonist Henry after determining that Hawthorne is the father of the child. The translator analyzes the difficulties of this translation practice from three aspects: vocabulary, syntax and culture.Under the guidance of Translation Shift Theory, the translator chooses the translation strategies in terms of level shift and category shift to solve the translation difficulties, including the tense and aspect shift, singular and plural shift, class shift, structure shift and intra-system shift. In the practice of translation, the translator explores the application of Translation Shift Theory in English-Chinese translation, hoping to provide a reference for the study of English-Chinese translation.
