| Winslow Homer is one of the most important American painters in the second half of the 19 th century.As influential as contemporary writers Henry David Solo,Herman Melville and Walter Whitman,Homer together with these writers created a style that was with distinctive American characteristics and both modern and simple.He advocated the reproduction of nature,insisted on the depiction of the American native theme.All of his works are close to the real life of the United States;they exude the brilliance of human nature and the care of humanity;and they become the symbol of American spirit.Throughout Homer’s life,his oil painting and watercolor painting together,have had a profound impact in the United States and even the world of fine arts.This paper will focus on the artistic achievements of Homer’s watercolor paintings,taking the 19 th century American experience of the Civil War and the post-war reconstruction as the background,and combining the painters’ rich experience.From his formal language,painting characteristics,theme selection and other aspects,the paper does a multi-angle and multi-level analysis,clearly interprets Homer’s watercolor art language,and deeply excavates what his watercolor art contains,the profound social significance. |
