A Report On C-E Translation Of Abstracts Of Patent Specifications

Since the reform and opening-up in the 1970 s,science and technology as well as Chinese economy has been developing rapidly.Patents involve the world's largest source of technical information,and according to the statistics,patents contain 90%-95% of the world's science and technology information.According to different requirements of clients,patent translation includes translation for filing,translation for information and translation for litigation.In addition,the patent translation can be divided into full-text translation and partial translation which means translation of patent abstracts.The thesis aims to analyze the problems met in the process of translation of patent abstracts,and translation methods are summarized.As to lexical gaps at the lexical level,creative translation is used for creating a compound.Fixed expressions in the translation of the abstracts of patent specifications can be adopted directly.Moreover,the number of elements in the original patent specifications is not clearly defined,so it should be confirmed through the context and the diagrams or charts in the patent specifications to decide whether singular form of plural form of the verb should be used.To solve the problems at the syntactic level,imitating translation can be used for the translation of sentences of the same patterns.In Chinese,active-voiced sentences are very common.However,passive-voiced sentences are often used in English.Thus,while translating the abstracts of patent specifications,the Chinese active-voiced sentences need to change into English passive-voiced sentence.This thesis includes four parts: the first part introduces the research background,research objects,significance of the research and the structure of the thesis;the second part provides the process of the translation practice,including pre-translation preparation,translation and revision;the third part provides a case study which shows the problems met in the process of translation and an analysis of the translation strategies to solve the problems at both lexical level and syntactic level;the fourth part is a conclusion which mainly introduces the major findings of the translation practice and limitations.
