Patent literature records information about invention and creation.Broadly speaking,it includes all patent-related materials, such as patent applications and patent specifications.Since patent documentation is related to the most cutting-edge science and technology, and a lot of latest technical information are derived from patent documents, patent documentation promotes the exchange and development of science and technology. Therefore, accurate translation of patent documentation is of vital importance.Based on her translation practice, the author makes a report on E-C translation of three patent application documents. Before translation, the author conducted a textual analysis of the original texts. The three patent application documents in this translation practice have fixed format in both style and language structure. In order to describe the technical solutions objectively, nominalization structures, simple present tense, sentences in passive voice and long complex sentences are frequently used in the three patent application documents.Patent document has the feature of legality and technicality. Some legal terms and a large number of technical terms are also used in the three patent application documents. In the translation process, the author encountered some problems and difficulties. In terms of vocabulary, the translation of technical terms and nominalization of verbs are the main difficulties for the author.Besides, there are many long complex sentences and sentences in passive voice in the three patent application documents, which also bring difficulties to the author.Under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, and based on the characteristics of patent translation and the differences between English and Chinese, the author adopted some strategies and techniques to tackle those difficulties in translation. For example,in translating technical terms, the author mainly referred to relevant authoritative materials and websites;conversion of part of speech is a technique the author used in translating nominalization of verbs. The author adopted the technique of division to translate long complex sentences and she combined literal translation with free translation to translate sentences in passive voice. With the author's hard work and help from the professionals, the translation was successfully completed. The translated texts still need improvement due to the author's inexperience.By summarizing and reflecting on this translation practice, the author hopes that she can benefit more from this translation practice. The author also hopes her reflections can provide some references for MTI students when they do relevant translation in their future work.
