On C-E Translation Of Deliberate Metaphors In Diplomatic News

As the communication between China and the world has become increasingly frequent,the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs,as one of the significant channel to propagating and expressing the political positions of China,has been attached great significance.The translation issues for metaphors in the diplomatic news published on this website have been deeply probed into by many scholars.However,the researches related to deliberate metaphor theory still lags behind in this area.Therefore,the author attempts to explore this subject.The thesis attempts to find the translation methods for deliberate metaphors in diplomatic news.In order to find appropriate translation methods,the author adopts the research method that combining qualitative and quantitative analysis.On the one hand,72 pieces of diplomatic news published on the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the year of 2017 and their translation are collected.Preliminary metaphor identification is performed with the aid of corpus-processing tool Wordsmith 7.0,and 1219 metaphors are further identified with the Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit(MIPVU).On this basis,151 deliberate metaphors are found according to the Deliberate Metaphor Identification Procedure(DMIP)and some deliberate metaphor signals.Moreover,the metaphors have been classified into seven categories based on their source domains and the features of the deliberate metaphors are summarized.On the other hand,through case study with consideration of the above-mentioned data analysis and the deliberate metaphor theory,the translation methods of deliberate metaphors in diplomatic news have been summarized as reproducing the image,substituting the image and reproducing and explaining the image.The thesis attempts to approach the deliberate metaphor translation issues appeared in diplomatic news translation from the perspective of deliberate metaphor theory.In this process,the translation methods are obtained based on the fact that deliberate metaphors instruct people to attend to the source domain and to process the target-domain concept with the aid of source-domain concept.The thesis is expected to enrich and contribute to researches in the area of deliberate metaphor.
