On Translation Strategies Of Metaphors In Diplomatic News From The Perspective Of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

Translation of metaphors has been under heated discussion from various perspectives and linguistapproaches in the discipline of translation studies. However, most of the existed works concentrate on translation of metaphors restrictingto literature works under the guidance ofstereotypicaltheories addressing the problem in terms of linguisticprespectives. The thesisattempts to focus on the translation strategy of metaphors in a non-literature discourse of diplomatic news with the assistance of Conceptual Metaphor Theory(CMT) which contributes new sight in the studies of translation of metaphors by linking the translatability of metaphors to the cognitiveconceptual system in source and target culture.In order to achieve the above-mentioned objective, the author identifies metaphorsin the Chinesediplomatic news from theChinese-English translation project of the official website of China’s Foreign Ministryunder the guidance of Metaphor Identification Procedures Vrije University(MIPVU), categorizesthese metaphors,proves they are conceptual metaphorsafter an in-depth analysis of their mapping routines, and summarizes their distinct features.Meanwhile, a survey of questionnaire among translators involving in the project was conducted to examine the challenges translators confronted in translation practice. With all these preparation,the author bodily proposesher hypotheses of translation strategies catering to metaphors in diplomatic news under the theoreticalframework of “Cognitive Translation Hypothesis” based on CMTand then testifies them with authentic examples in translation practice. It can be concluded that the strategies put forward by the author are effective in solving problems arising from metaphors in diplomatic news.
